An ancient Chinese proverb says “Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness” (which inspired AI’s logo).

I have modified that saying to the following:

Better to edit one Wikipedia article than to curse the mass media.

Better to download & use one piece of open source software than to curse Microsoft.

Better to post one blog entry than to curse Rupert Murdoch (unless of course you are posting on MySpace :-P).

Torture Hits Home - When the Unthinkable Becomes Acceptable

Georges Bernanos quotes

The horrors which we have seen, and the still greater horrors we shall presently see, are not signs that rebels, insubordinate, untamable people are increasing in number throughout the world, but rather that there is a constant increase in the number of obedient, docile people.
source

A thought which does not result in an action is nothing much, and an action which does not proceed from a thought is nothing at all.

I know the compassion of others is a relief at first. I don’t despise it. But it can’t quench pain, it slips through your soul as through a sieve. And when our suffering has been dragged from one pity to another, as from one mouth to another, we can no longer respect or love it.
Oh Dearism

Faith is not a thing which one “loses,” we merely cease to shape our lives by it.

A poor man with nothing in his belly needs hope, illusion, more than bread.

Civilization exists precisely so that there may be no masses but rather men alert enough never to constitute masses.

To be able to find joy in another’s joy, that is the secret of happiness.

God ordains that beggars should beg for greatness, as for all else, when greatness shines out of them, and they don’t know it.

Justice in the hands of the powerful is merely a governing system like any other. Why call it justice? Let us rather call it injustice, but of a sly effective order, based entirely on cruel knowledge of the resistance of the weak, their capacity for pain, humiliation and misery.

I propose a significant reduction, if not the complete elimination, of entire industries. These are industries that predominately ply in the trade of human misery and suffering eg. the fashion industry, the cosmetics industry, the advertising industry, and the mass media.

Life is but a journey – one does not arrive, one merely passes through.
One passes through experiences, one passes through relationships, one passes through world views, ideologies, belief systems.

Pulp Fiction exegesis

Jules: Wanna know what I’m buyin’ Ringo?
Ringo: What?
Jules: Your life. I’m givin’ you that money so I don’t hafta kill your ass. You read the Bible?
Ringo: Not regularly.
Jules: There’s a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you. I been sayin’ that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your ass. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker before you popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin’ made me think twice. Now I’m thinkin’: it could mean you’re the evil man. And I’m the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here, he’s the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could be you’re the righteous man and I’m the shepherd and it’s the world that’s evil and selfish. I’d like that. But that shit ain’t the truth. The truth is you’re the weak. And I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be a shepherd.

I do think that SOME sort of academic pursuit would be very good for you as you have to exercise that considerable intellect of your’s, young Stephen. I don’t think you should worry about it being overly vocationally oriented: pursue interests & passions. If you do that, you’ll probably gravitate into something you are naturally good at doing and will find a vocation because you do it well. Doing something because other people find it a useful avenue into the workforce ignores the fact that you are NOT the average Joe. You can do many things, I’m sure, that would severely challenge the average specimen. So leave the humdrum accounting bullshit to the poor sods for whom thats all they can manage, and pursue things that that brain of yours thinks are engaging. Here endeth the lesson.

Life

We convince ourselves that life will be better once we’re married or have a baby or two or when their older, or when they’ve left home.
We tell ourselves that life will be complete when we have a nicer car, go overseas on a holiday, make more money, have less bills.
The truth is – there’s no better time to be happy than right now!
Our lives will always be filled with challenges, unfinished business, debts to be paid, obstacles to climb.
Happiness is a journey, not a destination.
So – treasure every moment you have.
Yesterday is History.
Tomorrow – Mystery.
Today is a Gift. That’s why it is called the present! So…
Work like you don’t need money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
And dance like no-one is watching.
Take care and enjoy the moment!

Blessed indeed are those ears which listen not for the voice sounding without, but for the truth teaching inwardly. Blessed are the eyes that are shut to outward things but intent on things inward. Blessed are they who are glad to have time to spare for God, and who shake off all worldly hindrances. Consider these things, O my soul, and hear what the Lord your God speaks.

Observations of Reality

  • The vast majority of everything is crap (Sturgeon's Law).
  • Every person has their own agenda.
  • Nothing is simple, including this statement.

Movement/culture/group/fashion

By definition, this must be a mass attitude, for any simplistic reduction of ideas to an easily identifiable movement/culture/group/fashion subdues original & independent thought as a result of compromises of disparate insights/thoughts/ideas/opinions.

System

An organisation of resources (human, financial, matter/energy, or/and time) where each participant in that system conforms to a predetermined role; modifications to systems involving people are resisted by an inevitable consequence of those systems: bureaucracy.

Bureaucracy

A macro-attitude of a lack of motivation to react to any individual because the system obfuscates & introduces errors, also the system, being physically, psychologically, politically, and legally greater than the sum of the resources that make it up, has more power to act and react than has the individual.

Waves

  1. Agricultural revolution: Beginning of industry (regulated work for humans).

  2. Industrial revolution: Beginning of automation of industry (invention of machines to do work, humans work like these machines).

  3. Information revolution: Beginning of delegation of work from humans to machines which work like humans.

1 & 2 are hardware-specific, with invention of software 3 is hardware-independent i.e. virtual rather than physical.

Third Wave Existence

  • Totally relative personal space/relative personal time.

  • Space: Instantaneous/near-instantaneous global access to all digitally encoded information eg. the Internet.

  • Time: Asynchronous communication eg. fax, e-mail, voice-mail.

  • Totally event-driven, as opposed to time-driven, interaction with external entities.

  • Totally customised sensory input eg. digital earplugs.

Humans and Their Environment

Humans behave like their environment

  • eg. act like animal (independent or small groups) in prehistory,

  • eg. act like machine (interdependent) in industrial revolution era,

  • eg. act like [pure thought?|software?] (customised, event driven, relative, global tribalism) in information revolution era.

Opposite magnitudes for small and large

A small quantity of x has consequences of positive magnitude on a system, a large quantity of x has consequences of negative magnitude on a system, or vice versa.

Examples

Force of repulsion between particular subatomic particles (protons, neutrons and/or electrons) at large distances.

Force of attraction between particular subatomic particles (protons, neutrons and/or electrons) at small distances.

A small dose of amphetamines on people with ADD (attention deficit disorder) results in a decrease of brain activity.

A large dose of amphetamines on people results in an increase in brain activity.

At the onset of a manic phase, a calming effect results.
Further into the manic phase, an increase in energy results.

Round-trip Engineering

Any changes that are made to the source code will be reflected in the model and vice versa.

Pountain, D., "Best CASE Scenarios: Choosing OO Methods" in Byte Vol. 21 No. 8, August 1996, McGraw-Hill Companies Inc., p. 40IS 13.

Reverse Engineering?

Subjective Ethics

Each person has a subjective understanding of ethics, that is there seems to be a consensus by the vast majority of people on most things as to what is good and what is evil, and this consensus is what is macro-perceived as human morality. Each of us, however, have our own unique conception of highly ethical and highly base actions. For example, in my opinion one of the worst sins that you can commit is to be an arrogant prick and/or a complete idiot, and a noble act is to live authentically and to realise your full potential (god I hope I don't sound like one of those $500 motivational seminar dickheads...)

Lawyers

Lawyers are necessary for these reasons:

  1. Because the complexity of our lives is so much greater than in the past, we cannot now directly talk to or understand each other.

  2. Because we cannot understand each other, and also because each of our lives is so different, we fear each other.

  3. Because we fear each other, we don't trust each other, sign up contracts, inevitably break them, and then sue each other.

Functional Evolution

The more stupider you are, the more likely you are to kill yourself and/or someone else of equal or greater stupidity.
